Ghana National Flag

Ghana National Flag : Red, Gold, Green and a black star

The Ghanaian flag was designed by Mrs Theodosia Okoh when Ghana became independent in 1957.  The colours were adapted from the Pan-African colours of Ethiopia.  They are red, gold and green with a black five-pointed star at the centre of the gold stripe.

The Meaning of the Ghana National Flag

Red : The blood of those who shed their blood for the country's struggle for independence.

Yellow: Yellow represents the rich mineral resources of Ghana.  Gold is one of Ghana's major exports.  Ghana used to be called Gold Coast.

Green : The rich forest and vegetation of Ghana.

Black Star : Represent the lodestar of African freedom.
